The premise of Battlestar Galactica has become an entire franchise due to the popularity of the concept. Beginning back in 1978, Glen A. Larson created an ongoing joy for sci fi lovers with his original Battlestar Galactica series that aired on TV screens everywhere. Spawning many sequels over the years, including Caprica and the latest series which began its run in 2004, humans now live on a group of distant planets called the Twelve Colonies. Wars have gone on for decades on these planets against the Cylons, a group of cybernatics who plan to wipe out the human race altogether. Cylons offer a haven of peace and security but their intentions turn out to be false and deadly. Colonial starships carry the humans away but when attacked by the Cylons, find they are not able to compete. Commander Adama (played by Edward James Olmos of Miami Vice, Stand and Deliver fame) is the leader who takes the fugitive fleet of human survivors on a hunt for the mysterious 13th colony better known as planet Earth. Fun and often exciting drama with some great special effects and a gigantic and great looking spaceship called the Battlestar Galactica.

Torchwood is a British science fiction TV series created by Russell T Davies. The show premiered on BBC Three in 2006 and ran for four seasons. The story follows a team of investigators from the Torchwood Institute, a secret organization tasked with defending the Earth against alien threats.

From the same folks who brought you "Lost," "Fringe TV show" looks and feels a lot like "The X-Files" with way better lab equipment, except when it looks and feels a whole lot like "Altered States" as it goes to the furthest frontiers of human consciousness and imagination, except when its realism makes the show look and feel every bit as creepy as "The Twilight Zone." Not surprisingly, "Fringe" is a major science fantasy hit. The stories show a team of FBI agents who use "fringe" technology to demystify a terrifying series of events that suggest the mysterious workings of a parallel universe. Stories focus on Special Agent Olivia Dunham, whose boyfriend suffered hideous wounds from an unidentifiable chemical compound. Agent Dunham joins forces with mad scientist Dr Walter Bishop and his estranged son, racing against the clock to save Olivia's lover and humankind. The New York Times aptly describes "Fringe" as a "sensational, "artful, suspenseful mix of horror, science fiction, layered conspiracies and extended car chases".

Reasonably well adapted from big screen to small, "Highlander" showed the continuing exploits of Duncan MacLeod, super-annuated Highland warrior challenged to fight evil in the modern world. Unlike modern crime fighters who rely on DNA and cyber-tracking, MacLeod battled malefactors the old-fashioned way"”with valor, virtue, courage, and a healthy dose of vengeance. Every "Highlander" episode began with the same ritual narrative: "I am Duncan MacLeod, born four-hundred years ago in the Highlands of Scotland. I am Immortal, and I am not alone." In the first six episodes, Duncan himself delivered the preamble. MacLeod and his girlfriend, Tessa Noel, cleverly and comfortably have adapted to modern life, and they hide effortlesly in plain sight, operating an upscale antique store. From the very first iteration of the preamble, viewers understand MacLeod is by no means the only Immortal roaming the streets and subways, and not all of them are nearly so noble as MacLeod. Although he had hung-up his mace, MacLeod now has chosen to rejoin "The Game" for the sake of defending everything he cherishes as good and right. For many contemporary viewers, MacLeod represents the ever-living proof of the old adage, "Old guys rule."

"The Leftovers" is an American television drama series that aired on HBO from 2014 to 2017. It is based on a novel of the same name by Tom Perrotta. The show explores the aftermath of a mysterious event known as the "Sudden Departure," in which 2% of the world's population suddenly disappears without explanation.

"Stargate Universe TV show" (aka SGU) premiered on Syfy in September, 2009, part of a larger Stargate franchise, which has a production history at least as complicated as the plots of all the Star Treks combined. The immediate success of "Stargate Universe" provides the living proof that the ComicCon crowd never tires of going boldly where no man has gone before. The situation is more than a little reminiscent of "Battlestar Gallactica," but edgier and richer in good one-liners. This time, a group of intrepid explorers whose own ship has been disabled boards a crewless ship permanently locked on cruise control and set to go to the ends of the universe. Because they have no hope of returning to Earth, the eclectic crew of scientists, soldiers, and civilians must figure out how they will survive by their wits and the ship's tools as they float around the edges of the galaxy. Of course, the struggle for survival brings out the noblest qualities in the heroes, the vilest qualities in the villains, and hundreds of opportunities for uber-cool special effects.
